Sewing Rakusu
Students who mature in practice are offered the opportunity to sew Buddhas’s robe and take the Precepts, 16 guidance principles arising from one’s own best nature. The first stage of this is called Jukai, and the robe sewn is a bib-like small copy of the much larger priest’s robe, sewn later as practice ripens. All ceremonies originate from a student’s having taken refuge in the 3 Treasures: Buddha, Dharma, Sangha, and from their lifelong commitment to the Precepts.
